Keweenaw Water Trail

The Keweenaw Water Trail is located in and around the Keweenaw Peninsula, located at the northwestern corner of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. The size, location, and access to water resources this peninsula offers makes it a perfect destination for kayak or canoe recreation. Whether it's the rugged and challenging shores of Lake Superior, or the protected inland waters of the Portage waterway, the paddler will find miles of scenic splendor on this trail.

Many segments of the Keweenaw Water Trail follow historic routes that once carried Ojibwa Indians, and then Voyagers, speculators, miners, and finally commercial shipping. Some sections of the trail are still secluded and undeveloped, while others pass through picturesque small towns. This allows the wilderness traveler the option of an occasional prepared meal or hot shower, or the day-paddler the option of resting at a primitive campsite that can be accessed only from the water.

Unique to the Keweenaw Water Trail is the option to paddle a loop and return to your point of origin without backtracking. There is no need for two vehicles or shuttles, allowing the Keweenaw paddler to be totally self-sufficient. Trips of any distance or duration can be enjoyed on any segment of the trail, since access, landings, and attractions are spread along the entire length of the trail.
THE KEWEENAW

PERFECT FOR WATER RECREATION

The Keweenaw Peninsula extends from Michigan's Upper Peninsula out into Lake Superior. The 45 mile long "finger" offers unique water access and protection, and can act as a wind break depending on wind direction. Those looking to use the Keweenaw's waters may find one side dramatically different than the other when it comes to wind and wave action. During times when both sides are too rough for small craft, there are still plenty of inland waters. The Water Trail can be experienced in total by circumnavigating the entire Peninsula and the Portage waterway, or in pieces by concentrating on individual segments. Pick one of the access points along the trail, and choose how long you want to spend on your adventure. There will be many attractions, either natural or man-made, to take in as you glide along. If you're on a multi-day trip, you may spend your nights at a developed or primitive campsite, or in one of the accommodations in a town the trail passes through. It all depends on your available time and preferences.
